The Best of NYFW Fall 2011 - Day 1

JENNI KAYNE

The jewel tones were out in full force at Jenni Kayne's Fall 2011 fashion show, with chunky textured knits worn over silky mustard, magenta and midnight blue silks. Kayne paired the runway pieces with fur beanies and omnisex pointy-toed velvet slippers.

EVA MINGE

Eva Minge is thinking faux for fall. The Polish designer presented furry-collared wool coats with tailored '40s lines with bizarrely trendy fur over-the-knee boots in varying shades. Highlights included refined retro cocktail dresses with black crochet overlay and decadent sequined eveningwear.

IRINA SHABAYEVA

It seems that Project Runway winner Irina Shabayeva chose to pick up where Christian Siriano left off, presenting a fall collection rife with vibrant colors and dramatic silhouettes. Highly wearable knits and outwear were shown alongside painstakingly fragile cocktail dresses, many of which featured details that looked as if they'd been cut from paper.

Nicholas K

At Nicholas K, the grunge aesthetic was served up in weathered, utilitarian lace-up boots, the perfect complement to a collection of slouchy, rock-inspired pieces that, again, referenced the mid-'90s zeitgeist.

Christian Siriano

Christian Siriano's Fall 2011 was almost entirely black, but it was anything but boring. The Project Runway alum appeared to have practiced some restraint with the colors and frills this season, focusing instead on surprisingly sultry silhouettes. The towering platform Payless shoes were also surprisingly mature.

Richard Chai

There was a stark purity to the pieces showcased at the Richard Chai Love show. A subtle neutral palette featured playful flourishes in occasional burst of florals or shimmering paillettes. Hemlines skirted the floor or just below the knee, worn under layers of varying length and weight.

Tadashi Shoji

Tadashi Shoji's Fall 2011 collection, inspired by the ancient moss gardens of the Far East, was full of one-shoulder dresses and gowns in lush jewel tones. Models wore necklaces over their simple, straightforward pieces, some of which featured tiered fringe details.

Alisha Trimble

The styling at Alisha Trimble's fashion show —which included Kabuki eye makeup, paper crowns and gold fabric animal ears—was highly distracting. So much so that the clothing, a collection of mostly party dresses worn with nude grandma stockings, failed to make an impact.
