Rihanna's "Fifth Element" Shoe Choice!

Even if you're a big Rihanna fan, her latest look is probably going to confuse you. We're pretty used to Ri-Ri's head-scratching style moments, but when she was spotted at LAX today (after buzz about her canceling a slew of shows) she looked especially interesting.

The pop star wore a pair of denim cutoffs under a really long black tunic with cropped sides. A gold Peter Pan collar and a backwards baseball cap that read "Boy" accessorized her look. But oh, it gets weirder. Just take a look at the footwear she sported for her travels: bright white brace-like knee-high Alexander Wang boots with a chunky heel. Compelling choice. Kim Kardashian and waist-cinching cocktail dresses are as thick as thieves. Her selection at the Valentino store opening on Tuesday, however, veered into slightly new style territory with this full skirt and bowed waist.

It was an unexpected choice, since retro has never been part of the reality star's wardrobe vocabulary, especially not in the form of a '50s silhouette. Perhaps someone has been taking inspiration from Zooey Deschanel's darling style.

You might assume one would wear Valentino to the designer's event, but this abstract striped number was actually from Lela Rose's Fall 2012 collection. Bold move. The rest of Kim's look was nothing new: excessively fluffy false lashes, a pale pink pout, a thick ponytail, diamonds. Hey, why fix what ain't broke?

Rihanna may prefer to romp around pantsless in flame T-shirts and hip-high boots, but it's her ladylike looks that really make us swoon. For the sunny Battleship photocall in London, she proved this point in a silk Alexander Wang dress.

The olive green Pre-Fall design might have looked ordinary on anyone else, but on Rihanna it was so powerful it trumped Brooklyn Decker's risque mesh number. Maybe it's those bold blond locks, the peek-a-boo tattoos or her white talons that make this look so captivating.

Whatever it is, it's working. Looks like the pop star is following her own style mantra, "Wear the clothes. Don't let them wear you."
