Best and Worst Dressed at the 2012 Oscars Parties

The opulence of the Academy Awards isn't limited to the official red carpet. Celebrities who missed the major festivities still sported their finest at an array of viewing and after parties. Diamonds for everyone!

Heidi Klum avoided interviews at the Elton John AIDS Foundation Oscars Viewing Party, though she did reveal quite a bit of skin in her blindingly yellow Versace mini. Klum played off the dress' futuristic gold accents with metallic-toed pumps and a cushy gold clutch.

Katy Perry almost always looks like she's in costume, but she downplayed her signature kook at the Elton John Foundation viewing party in a glittering Blumarine gown and Miu Miu shoes. Pery is perhaps the one woman in the world who can pull off electric blue eyeshadow (the Cookie Monster-colored hair helps).

The ever-impeccable Dita Von Teese attended the Elton John Foundation viewing party in a stately-yet-playful pale pink Jenny Packham creation, expertly paired with Bulgari diamonds and Christian Louboutin pumps. Von Teese had a very special date for the evening: Her mom!

It's hard to believe that this is the same Rose McGowan who once hit the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards practically naked on the arm of Marilyn Manson. These days, she's sporting considerably more fabric, this particular look being Paule Ka.

Rarely does Kim Kardashian practice restraint with her wardrobe, but the figure-hugging black gown she wore to the Elton John AIDS Foundation party was surprisingly low-key compared to Kardashian's usual assortment of bandage dresses and cleavage-baring frocks.

Victoria's Secret model Alessandra Ambrosio bonded with reality television personality Kourtney Kardashian over their growing pregnancy bellies. Ambrosio chose a sleek, gathered one-shoulder gown, while blanketed her petite frame in a white sheath with a futuristic metallic yoke.

Someone needs to tell Miley Cyrus that she doesn't need to dress like an '80s hedge fund wife in order to be treated like an adult. Her Roberto Cavalli gown was made even stodgier with stiff, heavily styled curls and heartily applied makeup. I love the look, just maybe not on her...

Angelina Jolie may have had the statement dress of the night in her split-up-to-there Atelier Versace number, but Olivia Wilde had the streamlined sexy look down at the Vanity Fair after party. Her strapless black dress was adorned with glittering dragonflies at the waist.

Claire Danes didn't make it to this year's Oscars, but she did find a frothy Valentino frock for the Vanity Fair after party. The gown's youthful embroidered yoke and frilly skirt proved polarizing (she looks a wee bit "cupcake princess") but we can't get enough of Danes' gown's brilliant coral hue.

Bar Refaeli would look like a bombshell in a burlap bag. Put her in a slinky Roberto Cavalli gown dusted with silver and gold beads and it's just not fair. Light, barely there makeup and long blonde waves gave her look an air of effortlessness.

It takes a certain amount of moxie to wear a dress emblazoned with white-capped mushrooms. We'll give Glee star Dianna Agron that much. But paired with a basic product-heavy ponytail, this Carolina Herrera gown was not the yummiest possible option.

Nina Dobrev, a fixture at the most recent New York Fashion Week, looked dangerously close to flawless in a streamlined J. Mendel dress and oversized floral diamond earrings. The Vampire Diaries star wore her long brown hair in a single textured braid.

Spanish actress Paz Vega is drop-dead gorgeous, but it's hard to overlook the strange protrusion jutting out from her hip in this otherwise streamlined formal gown. It very much resembles a tree fungus. A fancy tree fungus, maybe.
