Fashion Forecast: Matchy-Matchy Prints

Olivia Palermo, Miu Miu, DVF, DKNY (Getty, Imax Tree)

Once upon a time (and in fashion that means approximately three weeks ago), mixing and matching was the new hip thing to do. Bloggers have given many lessons on how dressing to impress means making the most unexpected outfit combinations possible. Can you wear overalls with pink pumps? Certainly! Can leopard print be paired with neon? Duh. But lookout cool kids, there's a cooler kind of cool in town.

Welcome to a place where denim on denim is suddenly acceptable (and being touted by the likes of Charlize Theron and Rihanna) and the only way to shake up the stylesphere is to match. Completely. This isn't about wearing red shoes with a red bag and—eek!—a red manicure. No, we're talking bold prints, or more specifically promise-to-get-photographed-by-every-street-style-photographer-at-Fashion-Week-head-to-toe-prints.

Here's some runway and red carpet inspiration that just may embolden you to buy that floral suit you've been eying.

(Imax Tree)
This is a fun place to start. Who can look at this Alice + Olivia striped suit and not immediately think of Beetlejuice? A high-fashion Beetlejuice with much better hair and eyeliner, thank goodness.

(PacificCoastNews.com)
Leave it to Rihanna to lead the pack on a new trend. The allure of this Stella McCartney ensemble is totally understandable considering the pop star got to leave the house in silky pajamas with no "does this look okay with this?" agony. Sheer genius.

(Imax Tree)
The world will never have enough of Diane von Furstenberg's prints. They capture the essence of an era without looking dated. Her Spring 2012 line was chock-full of these loud patterns placed on blousy pants, tops and dresses.

(PacificCoastNews.com)
It's no secret that the entire drive behind Lady Gaga's eccentric fashion is to get noticed. And she did just that in Salvatore Ferragamo's herringbone. This kind of print enthusiasm may be zany for anyone else, but on this singer it's rather sophisticated.

When Donna Karan commits to a theme, she doesn't do so lightly. Matching pants and a blouse didn't give this DKNY runway look enough moxie, it needed a matching tote, heels and floppy sunhat, too. This is how you make a statement on the beach, no Borat mankini required.

Fashion Forecast: Provocative Pleats

Emma Stone, J. Mendel, Christian Dior, BCBG Max Azria (Getty, Imax Tree)

You might typically associate pleats with school girl uniforms and modest librarian-esque attire, but accordion folds are in the midst of a revolution. The classic detail has swept the runways and red carpet in in the form of sheer chiffon, iridescent silks and revealing new cuts.

From Victoria's Secret Angel Miranda Kerr to vetted style pro Olivia Palermo, stars have been quick to join the whimsical apparel movement. With a slew of gorgeous Fall 2012 options to come, this is going to be a hard trend to resist.

Emma Stone was one of the year's biggest breakout style stars, throwing us one fab look after another. This Lanvin Merlot masterpiece from the Golden Globes had some serious tactile allure.

(Imax Tree)

BCBG Max Azria kicked-off NYFW with a '70s inspired collection. The designer continued to feature last season's favorite (beaten to death) color-blocking trend, but breathed new life into his line with airy dresses like this one.

(Flynetpictures.com)

It's not easy to replicate Olivia Palermo's innate sense of style, but this just-daring-enough maxi-dress would be a safe place to start. As expected, the fashion maven accessorized the heck out of it with a hot pink clutch and layered chain necklaces.

(Imax Tree)

Christian Dior's romantic fall collection of lilacs and rich plums heavily incorporated the delicate element. Karlie Kloss stormed the runway in this breathtaking eggplant number while another not-so-modest hot pink design touted the edgy potential of the trend.

(Imax Tree)

For spring, J. Mendel wooed us with a slew of Art Deco designs. He took the theme a step further for fall with entrancing pleated dresses like this beaded dark teal one. It's nice to see '20s influence is still in full force.

Miranda Kerr makes anything she steps into hot. This deep-plunging Marilyn Monroe number, though, came with its own dose of sex-appeal (glowing tan and darling dimples not included).

(Imax Tree)

This skin-baring Bill Blass dress was highly reminiscent of Lea Michele's shimmering Valentino gown from the New Year's Eve LA premiere. Both offered the tantalizing elegance of a deep-V with a full skirt of glimmering folds.

Fashion Forecast - Citrus Notes

Citrus hues have been brightening up the runway and red carpet. From Beyonce's statement-making orange Lanvin gown at the MTV VMAs (yes, the one she wore to announce her pregnancy) to the collections of J Crew and Oscar de la Renta, these tangy bold colors are a visual treat. Fashion Forecast: Athletic Allure

Move aside, feminine frivolities, it's game time. A handful of designers are shaking things up with sporty racerbacks, bulky zippers and loads of mesh. If you thought these elements were strictly for the track, you're sorely mistaken. From the street to the red carpet, celebs are already dashing out to try the athletic style.

Breakout style star Miranda Kerr sexied up the trend—as she tends to do—with this peplum Peter Pilotto dress (say that 10 times fast!). The zippered bodice and lace-up Nicholas Kirkwood stilettos made this futuristic look positively winning.

Bridal wear queen Vera Wang spiced up her spring collection with an unexpected turn to racy style—in every sense of the word. Heavy netting met with drawstrings and hoods to create romantic uniforms for that fantasy couture basketball team of yours.

Charlize Theron can do no wrong. She was right on target in this Stella McCartney single-strap number at the Young Adult premiere. The designer's theme for spring may have been the delightful curlicues of Baroque art, but sheer mesh paneling gave a modern nod to team attire.

Normally you would associate Donatella Versace with curve-hugging gowns, dripping fringe or bright leather, but her diffusion line, Versus, leans toward the casual side of fashion. For spring, the designer played with loose silhouettes and visible chunky zippers like this black and lilac piece.

Rihanna brought the workout trend to the street with these Alexander Wang track shorts. At first glance you might think the pop star was going for a jog, but her gold jewelry and those ankle-wrap heels suggest otherwise.

Phillip Lim, the king of downtown chic, lent an athletic influence to silky pastel work wear for his spring line. This t-back trench is bound to be an editorial hit, or at least make it into the Fashion Week wardrobes of your favorite bloggers.

Nikki Reed's neon cutout dress from the Breaking Dawn premiere channeled the body-conscious movement of the '80s (but in much prettier fashion). This Michael Kors number came from his vibrant deep sea diver Resort collection.

Alexander Wang's spring line had a polarizing effect among viewers. Fashion's Boy Wonder debuted a slew of locker room looks. While a mesh zip-up dress is all fun and games, let's forgo the gym hair, please.

Christina Milian's scuba zip-up dress made her look like a '90s Barbie doll (you know, the ones whose swimsuits changed color in the water). The sporty motif doesn't get more literal than this, folks!

Fashion Forecast: Shoulder Exposure

Fashion's sexy focal point is ceaselessly shifting. The moment it tires of one zone it moves onto a fresh new show of bare skin. The power of the deep-plunge continues to resonate into another season, extending the sternum's glory moment for a while longer. Spring 2012, however, brought two new hot spots to our attention: the upper abs and shoulders. Let's direct our attention towards the one we can all embrace.

This off-the-shoulder trend has an alluring carefree effect—a quiet, innocent, almost accidental come-hither charm. It's feminine with a naughty twist, a style even your boyfriend will love (but let's not pretend your fashion choices revolve around him). Sure, this sort of shoulder exposure is nothing new, but it has been perfected by today's top designers and red carpet savvy celebs. It's officially time to brush your shoulders off.

Mila Kunis heated things up at the Friends With Benefits premiere in this saucy Lanvin number. A simple little red dress was taken up a notch with these seductive shoulder-grazing straps. Her smoldering stare didn't hurt either.

Rodarte became a household name after their renowned costume designs for The Black Swan, but their talents don't stop with feathers and tutus. The Mulleavy sisters' Spring 2012 collection countered their darkly dramatic past with colorful airy pieces. They embarked on loads of shoulder-display, one of their most girlish designs already gracing the red carpet on young Elle Fanning.

Diane Kruger can wear anything and look positively divine—and she often puts this to the test (like recently with her not-so-graceful Chanel number). Forever one of of Karl's darlings, she pulled off this pale pink bow-adorned Couture design for an AIDS benefit in Paris, revealing that even her collar bones are fab.

It's only a matter of time: This Marchesa dress and Lea Michele have a date with destiny. The label is famous for their extravagant frivolities, but their soft elegance is what makes red carpet magic. Remeber Anne Hathaway's crimson mousseline masterpiece at the Oscars?

The brilliance of Minka Kelly's Vivienne Westwood dress is that it gives the illusion that the straps have merely slipped off her shoulders. Actually, that's the genius in all of Westwood's designs: the juxtaposition of haphazardly draped fabric on corseted bodices.

Zac Posen may be famous for his mermaid silhouettes, but for Spring the designer drew attention upward in a most romantic clavicle exposé. Old Hollywood met Pride and Prejudice for this ladylike soiree.

This trend isn't just for fanciful dressers. Case in point: Kate Bosworth (one of Hollywood's most modern sartorialists) in Calvin Klein (the reigning king of minimalism). Who would have imagined a nude sheath could be so darn provocative. Red lipstick does get some credit.

Luca Luca's Raul Melgoza conveyed the vigor of Bianca Jagger's '70s style in his latest runway show. His playfully pleated sapphire design was a favorite due to its bluntly horizontal neckline.

Katy Perry's gold lamè dress at the Grammy Nominations Concert was actually quite demure on the KP wacky scale. Once you get past the entrancing shine, the cut of the Georges Chakra piece is quite exquisite.

Oscar de la Renta covered all sorts of high-fashion ground at his Spring 2012 show. Need a gown for that lavish fairy tale ball you'll be attending? Or a Barbie-approved pencil skirt for work? Perhaps a gauzy wind-blown ensemble perfect for running through a meadow? Then Oscar is your man. He fills our fantasy closet with timeless looks that don't refrain from showing a little shoulder, err, skin.
