Nicki Minaj caused quite a stir at New York Fashion Week when she donned a cropped top with multi-colored puff ball adornments paired with a bright orange pleated skirt and topped off with lime green mesh tights, hot pink socks and red and black print wedges. To say that Nicki isn't afraid of color would be an understatement.
Just when we thought we had seen the last of Nicki's eclectic ensemble, her colorful outfit is once again making headline news. Jessica Rogers, a young designer from Tulsa, Oklahoma, claims that Nicki copied her original designs. It turns out that Nicki's stylists had previously contacted Rogers, of SomedayNewYorker, about the possibility of using some of her designs. Rogers then sent Nicki's style team images of her work but never heard back, even after several follow-up attempts.
When Rogers saw the images of Nicki at the Herrera show, she was devastated. Rogers said, "I’ve worked very hard to make my dream of being a fashion designer come true...I feel like everything has crumbled down.” To make matters worse, Rogers is a huge fan of Anna Wintour and is particularly upset that Anna did not get the opportunity to see a Rogers-creation in person. "I admire Anna Wintour very much," she says. "I was hoping that one day she would see my garments and it would be the first time that she would see Puff Balls used as I use them.” (Rogers design below)
Rogers has since reached out to Nicki's stylist but the gesture was not well received. When the designer sent Nicki an original SomedayNewYorker garment, Rogers claimed that she was subsequently harassed by a woman from Nicki's team. Rogers made a firm statement, saying, "Many independent as well large scale designers go through this. Copying another designers work is wrong. It should not be stood for.”
