Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj and Lady Gaga are the reigning red carpet queens of quirky boundary-pushing ensembles: Lady Gaga's meat dress, Katy Perry's sequined Smurfette frock, and Nicki Minaj's leopard print bodysuit with matching Elvira hair all exemplify the ladies' memorable fashion statements. There's no doubt it has become nothing less than a one-upmanship of weirdness, leaving us to kick back and enjoy the fashion showdown.
For the MTV VMAs, each of the divas showed up in her own version of promise-to-get-talked-about looks. Katy Perry won in sheer quantity of wacky wardrobes—racking up a total of five ensembles for the night. Most notably, she started out the night in a geisha-inspired Atelier Versace frock. Katy added to the theme by carrying a paper umbrella and wore flowers in her hot pink curls. She later took to the stage in a Christian Dior Fall 2011 Couture look straight from the runway (cheese headwear included). The quirky diva followed this look with a custom shimmering record dress and matching 3-D hair piece.
But perhaps the most unexpected? Lady Gaga in a suit. The pop diva took an entirely different route than her usual provocative body-baring ensembles. Her latest way to shock the masses? With modesty. Oh, and a heavy dose of gender-bending. Lady G both walked the red carpet and performed in a Brooks Brothers suit. Her hair was styled in a retro Elvis 'do complete with side-burns and gruff facial expressions. This songstress is all about commitment.
Nicki Minaj must have predicted stiff competition because she took her bizarre red carpet style to a whole new level. We're not sure who designed this ensemble, but our bet is that Tim Burton and Japanese street fashion had a strong influence. Nicki was armored in a metallic bodysuit and mask, wore fuzzy slippers, a hot pink and yellow wig and carried around a chain of stuffed animals as an accessory.
It's hard to call a winner of the eccentric night, but the epic battle will undoubtedly continue.
